Revolutionizing Operations Through Automation: Facility Enhancements, Process Optimization, and Environmental Impact

Our latest automation project has marked a pivotal step in transforming both our operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. This comprehensive initiative encompasses strategic facility optimization, advanced workflow enhancements, and a conscious effort to reduce our environmental footprint, all while maintaining a focus on economic sustainability. 

Facility Layout Optimization: Maximizing Space and Enhancing Workflow 

The automation journey began with a thorough assessment of our facility’s layout, driven by a vision to optimize spatial utilization and streamline operations. Lewis Holt, our Senior Design Engineer, played a key role by utilising Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technology to precisely map out the existing setup. By analysing the production journey of a singular brace he was able to uncover critical areas of untapped potential, allowing us to reimagine how our space could better serve our production needs and accommodate new machinery.

Key modifications to the facility include: 

  • Structural Revisions: We removed non-essential walls and created new workspaces designed for smooth, uninterrupted flow. This change drastically improved the transition of materials and products through various stages—from raw material reception and inspection to production, quality control, and packaging. 
  • Vertical Integration: The installation of a Lift has revolutionized how we move materials between different floors. This upgrade not only enhances material handling safety but also facilitates higher-volume transportation with significantly reduced time and effort. 
  • Improved Work Environment: Beyond operational efficiency, we focused on enhancing the working environment for our staff. Additional windows and natural light now flood the production space, creating a more pleasant and productive workspace that boosts employee morale and well-being. 

Systematic Process Enhancements: Efficiency and Reliability

In conjunction with the facility changes, we implemented a suite of systematic process improvements aimed at boosting operational efficiency, streamlining production, and ensuring a seamless manufacturing journey.

  • New Trolley System & Euro Boxes: 

    • Optimized Storage and Order Tracking: The introduction of a new trolley system in tandem with Euro boxes has provided a more organized and scalable solution for managing production components. By stacking Euro boxes on trolleys, we have significantly increased our storage capacity and improved our ability to track orders efficiently through various stages of production. 
    • Integrated with Kanban System: In alignment with lean manufacturing principles, the Euro box system has been integrated into our Kanban system to enhance the production of frequently ordered items. The system operates on a simple yet highly effective replenishment model: when one box is emptied, another is immediately introduced. This ensures a constant, uninterrupted supply of pre-cut components, preventing bottlenecks in the production line and reducing downtime. 

Elevating Environmental Sustainability

A key pillar of the automation project is its alignment with our ongoing commitment to sustainability. The new processes and facility upgrades have not only boosted productivity but have also played a critical role in minimizing our environmental footprint. 

Key environmental impacts include: 

  • Energy Efficiency: The structural modifications, particularly the elimination of bottlenecks and the integration of automated systems, have resulted in reduced energy consumption throughout the facility. This contributes to lower operational costs and supports our green initiatives. 
  • Waste Reduction: By optimizing the workflow and ensuring more accurate production through the Kanban system, we’ve been able to significantly cut down on material waste. Better storage, tracking, and utilization of raw materials also help prevent overproduction. 
  • Long-term Economic Sustainability: The automation project not only cuts operational costs but also positions us for long-term growth. These changes are designed to scale with our business, ensuring we remain competitive while maintaining a focus on sustainability.
